Conduct, Meetings, and Articles! Oh MY!
I cannot believe that it has been a week and a half since I arrived to begin my internship at Ohio State. It’s surreal that we only have less than 7 weeks left and then I return home. These past two weeks, I have been immersed in GRE prep, group meetings, professional development, conduct cases, conduct articles, and assignments. Working in the Student Conduct Office has been incredible thus far; the staff members, such as Lori, Brian, and Kelly, have been tremendous in acclimating me to the office and procedures. I am treated as an employee of the institution, and when an opportunity arises that Brian and Doug, my supervisors, believe would be beneficial for me, I am contacted immediately. I have sat in on conduct cases in person and via phone, versed myself with the Maxient data system, and been introduced to staff members. Being a large institution, it is expected to have some conduct issues, and I think the entire process is interesting in itself. I have been exposed to procedures in regard to conduct to an extent, but I feel as though I am fully immersed in the procedures and cases in the Student Conduct Office. As I sit in on conduct cases, read reports, and compile information that will eventually form into a research project, I am humbled by the amount of effort put forth by the Student Life staff members to include me in everything.
This internship is also intentional with its cohort model. I, along with 9 other interns, spend SO much time together! Although many of us work in separate offices, we live together, eat together, and have meetings together for most of the week. I learn about the different departments and projects through my cohort, and we collaborate in many projects that are assigned to us. This is my first time actively participating in a cohort model of this sort, and, of course, there are benefits and challenges. I love that we are all connecting with each other and that our interactions are necessary to be successful. I am learning to continuously appreciate being part of a team and work with people who may differ in values, opinions, and ideas. With that, we do have our struggles when it comes to group assignments as we are a group of ten individual leaders. Ten agents for change. Ten independent individuals who have organized and implemented programs, earned positions of responsibility, and who have differing leadership styles. And we are all supposed to collaborate and implement one idea! It’s interesting to see how everyone works together, communicate ideas, and I am excited to see the final outcome of our projects. It’s been a little rough at meetings, but we do not let that get in the way with our daily interactions with each other. As we continue on this journey together, I believe that we will continue to become a stronger group in both the work and social settings.
